Eddy Current Inspection
Eddy Current Testing, or Eddy Current Inspection, is a convenient and reliable non-destructive testing method used to detect surface and near-surface defects in a range of conductive materials. This testing method is non-hazardous and is commonly used in a range of industries, such as aerospace, manufacturing and automotive.
The Benefits Of Eddy Current Testing
- Versatile and reliable testing method
- Lightweight equipment for on-site testing
- Instant computerised results
- Test materials require minimal preparation
- Sensitive to small defects and cracks

What Is Eddy Current Testing Used For
There are a variety of inspections that can be performed with Eddy Current Inspection, however, it is commonly used to detect surface and near-surface flaws, metal and coating thickness measurement and sorting metals by grade and hardness.
Eddy Current Testing equipment is extremely portable, which allows our technicians to inspect equipment or components that are difficult to access. The equipment is also very reliable and sensitive to very small cracks.
Results from Eddy Current testing are instant, which means we can report to site and operation management immediately, ensuring speedy decision making.
How Eddy Current Testing Works
Eddy Current testing makes use of electromagnetic induction to detect flaws and defects in both ferrous and non-ferrous materials by inducing an eddy current field within the test material.
One of the advantages of this testing method is that it requires minimum preparation and you do not need to remove any surface paint or coating from tested materials. This makes eddy current testing ideally suitable for inspecting painted structures, components and parts.
Eddy Current Testing Available On-site Throughout The UK
Eddy Current Testing equipment is lightweight and easy to use which allows our qualified NDT technicians to carry out eddy current testing for our customers on-site throughout the UK. We are also able to provide Eddy Current Inspection at our specialist testing facility at Colnbrook, just off the M25.
All of our NDT technicians are all qualified with industry recognised PCN (Personnel Certification in Non-Destructive Testing) in accordance with BS EN ISO 9712. Here at Capital NDT, our testing facility is also accredited by a number of well-known bodies, such as ADIPS.
